LEGENDS JUST DON'T DIE
(A TRIBUTE TO JOHN FOGERTY)

Words: Sandy J. Hagle

The midifile

When you're sitting by the river,
In your mind you hear a song.
Close your eyes and try to see her,
It's Proud Mary rollin' on.
Let it take you to a time and place
That brings a smile right to your face.

We couldn't see the rain that went
And washed this band away.
How we hoped the music's spirit
Would return again to play.
All we had left were our albums,
But those songs remained our anthems.

Over the horizon, there's a blue moon risin',
Up out from the swamp into the sky.
Take a look and you will know why
Legends just don't die.

Now the music's come full circle,
And it's back where it belongs.
See the crowds of cheering people
Give testimony to their songs.
In the window where it still burns true,
We've kept that candle lit for you.

TO ME I WILL BE TRUE

When I'm stuck in the madness of the moment.
And backed against a wall of disappointment.
Somehow I get through upon enlightenment
Of this golden rule, I am no ones' fool
To me I will be true.

When it feels like the sky's crashin' on my head.
Tears I've held inside for what remains unsaid.
No way will sanity take the fall instead
I'll ride the tide out, in my spirits' hide-out,
To me I will be true.

Don't step on me, I'm not your rug.
Better watch for holes you've gone and dug.
Because I can laugh it all off with a shrug,
And keep my cool, do what you gotta do,
To me I will be true.

If I can't climb the mountain then I'll bring it down.
I've come too far to let it get me turned around.
Up into the firmament these words will resound
Go on mess with my mind, the best of me is doin' fine,
To me I will be true.

THREADS OF HOPE

Love stole me away,
In its' talons like a bird of prey.
Left me in uncertainty to lay.
I'm still here, kept in the air without a rope,
Hangin' on these little threads of hope.

Night comes closing in,
Sending out your name upon the wind.
Oh, drink me dry and fill me up again.
Now you're gone, just beyond my reach where I float,
Hangin' on by little threads of hope.

I held back and tried,
Not to let you see what burns inside.
You saw everything that I denied.
I'm still here, will I disappear before the strands
Of aching hope go slipping through my hands?

Love stole me away,
Left me in uncertainty to lay.
Hangin' by these threads of hope I'll stay.

RUN THROUGH THE FIRE

Too long, sittin' in the dark with blinders on.
Like a candle, waitin' to be touched by the flame.
Throwin' shadows is as close as it ever came.
Better go chase it down before it's gone.

Once I run through the fire I'll be burning bright.
It's me you'll see lighting up the sky tonight.
Sailin' across the stars 'til I'm out of sight,
Just a phoenix in flight.

Time passed, lookin' back only gets you nowhere fast.
Like a sunrise, waitin' to be freed from inside.
Standin' at the edge of morning with wings spread wide.
Better take off and find myself at last.

Once I run through the fire I'll be burning bright.
Coming straight from the ashes to set it right.
Sailin' across the stars 'til I reach daylight,
Just a phoenix in flight.

Too long, sittin' in the dark with blinders on.

THE UNSUNG HEROES

Now a saint named Teresa dwells up above.
And Diana left us her legacy of love.
Seems to me we neglect to pay tribute to those
Who may not make the headlines or TV talk shows.
In everyday life they're the unsung heroes.

For the soldier who fought for beliefs we live by.
In the night he wakes screaming and can't forget why.
For the average people who'll wager their lives.
When the cop or the stoker, or the neighbor arrives,
Can we repay them if only their honor survives?

Maybe you won't be given a trophy or prize.
It won't make you less of a hero in someones eyes.
Parents, teachers and coaches, the list it just grows.
For the pain that remains long after a bomb blows.
Let's stop and salute all the unsung heroes.
